Psychiatry and Medication FAQs

Prescribers, such as psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), physician assistants (PAs), and psychiatrists (MDs), are qualified to diagnose and treat a broad range of mental health conditions. They play a key role in developing individualized treatment plans that may include medication, psychotherapy, or both. Common conditions treated include:

Commonly Treated Mental Health Disorders:

  • Anxiety disorders (including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety)
  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders
  • Bipolar disorder (type I and II)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Treatment-Resistant Depression
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Sleep Disorders related to mental health
  • Adjustment Disorders
  • Mood Disorders related to medical conditions or substance use

Medication management is a mental health service that ensures patients receive the safest, most effective use of psychiatric medications as part of their overall treatment plan. It involves ongoing evaluation, adjustment, and monitoring of medications by a licensed prescriber—such as a psychiatrist (MD), psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP), or physician assistant (PA).

Key Steps of Medication Management:

  • Initial evaluation of symptoms and medical history to determine the appropriate medication
  • Review of drug interactions to prevent harmful effects from multiple prescriptions
  • Patient education on how to take medications properly and what to expect
  • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress, side effects, and symptom control
  • Adjustment of dosage or medication type based on patient response

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved, noninvasive treatment for individuals struggling with treatment-resistant depression. This therapy uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of the brain associated with mood regulation—particularly in patients who have not responded to antidepressant medications or traditional talk therapy.

How TMS works:

  • TMS delivers repetitive magnetic pulses (rTMS) through a device placed on the scalp
  • These pulses stimulate neural activity in the prefrontal cortex, the region often underactive in people with depression
  • Sessions are typically administered five days a week over a course of several weeks
  • No anesthesia or sedation is required, and patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatment

Conditions Treated with TMS:

  • • Major depressive disorder (MDD)
    • Treatment-resistant depression (TRD)
    • Some clinics also offer TMS for anxiety, OCD, or PTSD (based on evolving research and clinical protocols)

Benefits of TMS Therapy:

  • Non-systemic (no medications involved)
  • Minimal side effects (typically mild scalp discomfort or headache)
  • No memory loss or cognitive side effects
  • Covered by many insurance providers, including for treatment-resistant depression

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray medication specifically developed for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Unlike traditional oral antidepressants, SPRAVATO® works on the glutamate system in the brain, offering a rapid-acting solution for patients who haven’t found relief from standard medications alone.

How SPRAVATO® Works:

  • Administered as a nasal spray in a certified healthcare setting under medical supervision
  • Delivers fast-acting symptom relief, often within hours or days, helping to bridge the gap while oral antidepressants take effect
  • Typically used in combination with an oral antidepressant, not as a stand-alone treatment
  • Targets NMDA receptors, which are not directly affected by traditional SSRIs or SNRIs

Who SPRAVATO® Is For:

  • Adults diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression (TRD)
  • Individuals experiencing major depressive disorder (MDD) with acute suicidal ideation or behavior
  • Patients who have tried at least two other antidepressant medications without success

Benefits of SPRAVATO®:

  • Rapid reduction in depressive symptoms
  • Innovative mechanism of action
  • Typically covered by many insurance providers when TRD criteria are met
